EU: Parliament adopts Directive improving the fight against discrimination towards migrant workers

Yesterday, March 12, the MEPs adopted the compromise reached with the Council of EU Ministers on the draft directive containing “measures facilitating the exercise of rights conferred on workers in the context of freedom of movement for workers.”  Soon, the Council should permanently adopt this text, which improves the fight against discrimination based on the nationality of European migrant workers.

The text about to be adopted is quite close to the European Commission’s draft (see article No. 130284). In terms of content, the bill makes relatively few changes from existing law (especially regulation 492/2011). Its value is mostly symbolic and political at a time when the free movement of workers within Europe is being questioned, in a context of confusion with posting situations, and of rejection of all forms of immigration.
