The well-known former human resources executive at the German public company Volkswagen AG (VW) and the man behind the controversial 2002-2005 labor market reforms has come front stage once again. During a press conference held in Berlin on 09 May, Peter Hartz presented a new concept aimed at tackling long-term unemployment in Germany and youth unemployment across Europe. After congratulating France’s Emmanuel Macron on his election success, Mr. Hartz invited the president-elect along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to lay the groundwork for a concrete Franco-German project that could reduce Europe’s youth unemployment and breath new life into both the Franco-German relationship and the European idea.
