After the ILO
adopted, in 2006, the maritime labor convention, the European social partners engaged collective negotiations in
the light of article 139 of the Treaty, reaching an agreement officially signed
on May 19, 2008. This text brings some provisions of the ILO’s convention into
European law. According to the European Commission, it will help improving the
working conditions of the approximately
300.000 European seafarers. The new directive will come into force at
the same time as the convention, i.e. twelve months after the ratification of
the latter by the required number of countries. The Member States will then get
twelve months from the date of enforcement to transpose the text.
