On September 22, 2014, the European Social partners in the telecoms sector: UNI Europe (representing employees) and ETNO - the European Telecommunications Network Operators (representing employers) agreed on a joint declaration supporting gender equality. They stressed that diversity across all positions and at all hierarchy levels guarantees success in terms of economic performance, dynamism, and creativity. The social partners want to address female access to decision–making positions as well as focusing on salary equality and working conditions.
Noting that women are under-represented in the sector, especially in the decision-making positions, the social partners are looking to increase the number of women working in the sector. Moreover because the sector is facing a future with shortages of qualified staff they need to attract more women. More broadly, the declaration says that implementing a voluntary policy on gender equality will have a positive impact on customers, employees and businesses in the sector.
