On October 16, the European social partners in the food and drink industry: FoodDrinkEurope (employers body) and EFFAT (trade union) presented a joint initiative to MEPs pledging their commitment to encouraging high quality apprenticeships in businesses across Europe. This commitment aims to attract the young to the sector and to strengthen competition in a sector, which is the leading European manufacturing employer with 4.5 million employees. This is the first time that the European social partners have come together to improve the apprenticeship system in Europe.
A common will to make the sector more attractive and competitive. In 2012 EFFAT and FoodDrinkEurope commissioned a study on the labor market in the European food and drink industry. On the basis of the results they defined two complementary objectives: to fight youth unemployment and to build up the labor supply.
