Leaders of the European Union's 27 member states signed, on December 13, the Lisbon Treaty. Even if it contains a few steps forward, the new "simplified" treaty in not a revolution in social matters. (Ref. 071024)
After several months of negotiations, the 27 leaders signed the Lisbon Treaty, approved by the European Council last October. The Treaty includes the Charter of Fundamental Rights and becomes legally binding (except for Great Britain and Poland which used the opt-out clause). Just because provisions concerning “fair competition”, which appeared among the Union’s goals, were cancelled, does not mean that the new text is more “social” than the European Constitution draft.
