EU : the 3rd EMF Congress will recommend a proactive anticipatory industrial policy on restructurings

Reaction to globalization. This British initiative aims to underscore the weight of the union in the face of the powerful IG-Metall which currently holds the post of general secretary with Peter Scherrer, and its different approach to globalization. Unite is convinced that defence of the interests of workers depends on reinforced cooperation, even through mergers between international trade unions rather than through regional organization. Nevertheless, the “putsch” seems to have been avoided and the political resolution and the work program outlined hereunder should be adopted. The EMF has reacted by saying it is “totally favourable to worldwide cooperation and coordination between workers and their unions and intends to consolidate cooperation with the International Federation of Metal Workers (FIOM) in order to guarantee  policies and coordinated actions for the protection of the interests of all metal workers”. Furthermore, the EMF specifies that “it is only by strengthening solidarity between unions and workers in the European iron and steel industry that it will be able to play “a genuine role as a counterweight and effective actor in Europe”.
