EU: the Committee on Women’s Rights of the European Parliament proposes to extend minimum maternity leave to 20 weeks

Longer maternity leave and equivalent salary. The MEPs propose to extend minimum maternity leave to 20 weeks instead of 18 as the Commission proposed (currently, maternity leave lasts 14 weeks). 6 of these 20 weeks will have to be taken after childbirth. Still in line with the idea of encouraging mothers to be with their child after he is born, the draft report provides that the governments may introduce mandatory parental leave which may not exceed six weeks. It also recommends improving the income of women on maternity leave by setting as a principle that it must be at least 100% of the last salary or average salary during the mandatory leave, and cannot be below 85% for optional leave periods. The European Commission’s proposition guaranteed an income equal to monthly or average wage with no other details.
