The 700 union delegates participating in the ETUC's congress, taking place until May 24, in Seville, adopted a resolution to support the 1,600 workers from Delphi's Puerto Real (Cadiz) site, who are going to loose their job after their factory shuts down. During this congress, José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission and José Luis Zapatero, head of the Spanish government, both affirmed that they were financially going to support the reclassification of the employees concerned, instead of the failing company. Numerous are the institutions concentrating on the fate of Delphi’s employees in Cadiz on the occasion of the ETUC’s 11th congress, which is taking place not far from there, in Seville. On May 21, the European Commission’s President, José Manuel Barroso, had told national and local authorities that the European union would bring financial support to this reorganization, which has an impact on 1,600 workers, as well as numerous employees in subcontracting companies (see our story n° 070445).José
