EU: the European Commission pushes for social protection and gender pay equality

On 20 November during the EU Social Summit held in Gothenberg, the European Commission adopted an action plan aimed at eliminating the gender pay gap. The EU Commission also launched a second consultation phase with the European social partners on social protection for non-standard employment.

The European Commission intends to show that the European Social Pillar, which was adopted in Gothenberg (c.f. article No. 10455) is more than just a vague promise. On Monday 20 November the Commission published two initiatives to accomplish this new concept.


Pay equality. The first initiative comprises an action plan to close what is currently an average 16.3% gender pay gap. The 17-page plan incudes the ‘Future of Europe’ Eurobarometer that evidences just how much this issue matters to Europe’
