On September 3, 2008, in a resolution adopted by a crushing majority (562 for, 65 against and 6 abstentions), the Parliament adopted the initiative report of the Spanish MEP Iratxe Garcia Pérez (PES) on equality between women and men. The Parliament wants binding measures to guarantee equal pay and invited the Member States to encourage virtuous companies. (Ref. 080657)
MEPs are worried by “the lack of progress
as regards the gender pay gap between women and men” and invite the Commission
and the Member States to “establish, in cooperation with the social partners,
any new measures or new approaches in the implementation of existing measures.”
