The announcement of 4 000 job cuts on the Belgian site of Volkswagen-Forest has affected Community institutions. The representatives of the European Commission quickly reacted to signal that the European social Fund and ERDF, a fund devoted to regional planning, were going to be mobilized to help the employees laid off (see story n°061174). This affair also reopens the debate on the non- intervention of the future European Globalization Adjustment Fund (EGF) in case of "intra-Community relocation". A few days before its adoption in first reading by the European Parliament, a "Volkswagen " amendment could be introduced. (Ref 061189)
The VW case. It comes at the right time…and the wrong one. On the one hand, the VW case pushes the European legislator to adopt before the end of the year the EGF, whose objective is to finance reclassification actions further to disastrous restructurings in a given employment basin (see story n°06193).
