EU: Volkswagen-Forest restructuring will influence the adoption of the European Globalization Adjustment Fund

The announcement of 4 000 job cuts on the Belgian site of Volkswagen-Forest has affected Community institutions. The representatives of the European Commission quickly reacted to signal that the European social Fund and ERDF, a fund devoted to regional planning, were going to be mobilized to help the employees laid off (see story n°061174). This affair also reopens the debate on the non- intervention of the future European Globalization Adjustment Fund (EGF) in case of "intra-Community relocation". A few days before its adoption in first reading by the European Parliament, a "Volkswagen " amendment could be introduced. (Ref 061189)

The VW case. It comes at the right time…and the wrong one.
