European social partners sign multi-sectoral agreement on breathable crystalline silica

Agreement is first of its kind on this issue. It will apply from 1 November 2006. Over 2 million employees are involved by the risk of silicosis, a disease which can lead to cancer. The European Commission backed this voluntary agreement which is to be implemented by the national social partners. (Ref. 06410)

After 9 months of negotiations, social partners gathered in the multi-sectoral Negotiation Platform on Silica (NePSI) signed on 25 April an “Agreement on workers health protection through the good handling and use of crystalline silica and products containing it”. It will apply from 1 November 2006.
