Agreement is first of its kind on this issue. It will apply from 1 November 2006. Over 2 million employees are involved by the risk of silicosis, a disease which can lead to cancer. The European Commission backed this voluntary agreement which is to be implemented by the national social partners. (Ref. 06410)

After 9 months of negotiations, social partners gathered in the multi-sectoral Negotiation Platform on Silica (NePSI) signed on 25 April an “Agreement on workers health protection through the good handling and use of crystalline silica and products containing it”.
