Since 2014 Finland’s trade unions have been gearing up for a merger of the country’s three main confederations. Following an initial period when the project seemed to be on track without any major problems, the tone now might be influenced by a change in the SAK union’s leadership.
The merger project. Three union confederations currently operate in Finland: SAK (Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions) is primarily a blue collar confederation and has a little under one million members; STTK (Finnish Confederation of Professionals) is primarily a white collar body with some 540,000 members and; AKAVA (Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff) represents those with university, professional or other high-level education and has 610,000 members.
