Finland: new legislative basis for zero hours employment contracts but with better conditions for those employed on them

Finland’s President has just promulgated several legislative amendments that will come into force on 01 June, which aim to better protect those working under variable time employment contracts.

Finland has no legal definition for the family of variable time employment contracts. Broadly speaking they can be different types of employment contracts that include flexible provisions on working hours, so for instance a contract clause that allows for the duration of working time to vary from between zero and 40 hours depending on the employer’s needs.
