France: CFDT becomes largest trade union organisation in private sector

On 31 March, the level of trade union representation across industries in the private sector was made public. The statistics are published every four years according to the results of professional elections. The CFDT (French Democratic Confederation of Labour) has become the number one trade union group in the sector, dethroning the CGT (General Confederation of Labour) which has held the position until now.

The French labour ministry confirmed the outlook, which the organisations themselves had anticipated, with the CGT’s leader Philippe Martinez having already prepared his troops for such an outcome. In 2013, the two main confederations were already going toe to toe, but the fact that the CFDT (classed as a reformist union) has officially taken the number one spot remains a historic moment.
