International companies located in France sometimes provide for specific wage conditions of advantages, such as an expatriation bonus, for employees from the parent company or, in more drastic cases, for people who are not French. In a decision of April 17, 2008, the French Supreme Court confirmed that this tool for human resources management based on the employees' nationality can, if certain requirements are met, be totally legal. The case brought before the supreme court ends – at least as far as French courts are concerned – a legal fight started by a French researcher from the Synchroton (European research center located in Grenoble), who objected to the fact that the statuses applicable at the time held the foreign service bonus for partners from other countries only.
