The food delivery platform Just Eat is to recruit at least 4,500 delivery staff in France by the end of this year, according to newspaper reports in the country. Just Eat confirms that it has commenced its recruitment drive, with some 350 employees hired in Paris on open-ended contracts, with weekly working time of between 10 and 35 hours. “Among the people hired there are many students and micro-entrepreneurs. There are also career development opportunities, whether it is to become a ‘captain’ to mentor 25 people or, later, to work in our offices,” Victor Ennouchi, who leads Just Eat’s operations in France, tells a French newspaper. In December, Just Eat became the first platform in the UK to pay its delivery staff by the hour rather than by the job (see article n°12270). The company, which merged with Takeaway.com in 2020, has thus fallen into line with the latter’s global policy, with more than 22,000 salaried delivery staff in 12 countries. The Deliveroo and Uber Eats food delivery platforms meanwhile rely on freelancers who are paid for each delivery. On Friday, following a call from France’s General Confederation of Labour (CGT), delivery staff from the latter two platforms as well as the Stuart platform attended rallies at various towns across France to condemn the worsening of their work and pay conditions.
