The economy’s future needs in skilled employees, combined with demographic ageing and fewer applicants for apprenticeship, are driving German businesses to offer in-house and external upgrading courses for apprentices with growing deficits both in terms of basic knowledge and soft skills. It is, in substance, what comes out of the study presented, on April 8th, by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Berlin. “What we’re lacking isn’t apprenticeship places but applicants; the demographic turn has now reached the apprenticeship sector” declared Martin Wansleben, DIHK general secretary. Thus, in 2009, 50,000 apprenticeship places remained vacant for lack of applicant or inadequate qualifications. According to the DIHK’s study, businesses aren’t going to throw in the towel, especially SMEs, more optimistic than large businesses in terms of training prospects.
