A study by the Hans-Böckler WSI institute, published on 05 March, has shown that the uptake of flexible working modes (teleworking, trust based working, mobile hours /Gleitzeit) is gender dependent. Fathers tend to invest more time in work, whilst mothers spend more time caring for children. Yvonne Lott, the study’s author argues that this duality is strengthening traditional gender role differences and emphasizes the need for state and private enterprise policies to redress the trend.
Based on one of the WSI’s largest annual longitudinal studies undertaken (available here) across several thousands of households, and generating a rich socio-economic data base, Yvonne Lott, WSI gender and working time specialist, primarily underlines the advantages of the various forms of flexible working that are enabling a better work-life balance for workers.
