Germany: Amazon, under pressure from Verdi strike action, falls back on its Polish distribution centers to ensure Christmas packages are delivered on time

Verdi, the German services union, which has since spring 2013 being trying to get Amazon to sign a collective agreement took the decision to hit hard with its biggest strike action at the company just a few days before Christmas. The strike action started on the night of December 14 and continues until Wednesday night hit five of Amazon’s logistics centers in Germany and then hit a sixth on Monday morning. But this new show of strength has changed nothing. Management at the online giant still refuses to sign any collective agreement that aligns itself to collective agreements currently in operation in the retail sector and it confirmed that all the deliveries would be made in time for Christmas. To keep to their word the company called on three recently opened Polish distribution centers.

Strong action according to Verdi. According to Verdi almost 2,300 employees stopped work on December 15 in five of Amazon’s logistics centers at Bad Hersfeld (Hesse), Leipzig (Saxony), Graben (Bavaria), and Rheinbert and Werne (both in North Rhine-Westphalia).
