Germany: apprenticeship market improves with recovery

Many people came to break the good news. In front of three ministers, Franz Müntefering (Labour), Annette Schavan (Education), Michael Glos (Economy) and of three chairmen of employers' organizations (BDA, ZDH and BfB), the Federal Employment Agency announced, on October 11 in Berlin, a clear-cut improvement on the apprenticeship market. The German trade union confederation DGB drew a more critical balance. (Ref. 070848)

According to the federal employment agency (BA), 29.100 young people had not yet found a apprenticeship position by September 30 (date closing the training year 2006-2007). However, this is the lowest figure recorded since 2002. In parallel, 18.400 positions remained vacant. “The difference between the number of young people who have not yet found a apprenticeship position and the number of available posts appreciably shrank back to 10.700”, insisted Raimund Becker, member of the BA’s managemen
