Germany: conflict between Verdi and Amazon goes downhill with the announcement of three sorting centers opening in Poland

Whereas Verdi and the 9,000 German employees of the world leader in e-commerce, Amazon, have been fighting since the beginning of the year over the improvements of pay and adoption of the sector’s collective agreements, the company confirmed, on Monday, October 7, that 3 big sorting centers were going to open in Poland.  The company promises that this won’t lead to any closures in Germany but the biggest clients of the Polish centers are mostly… Germans, and eastern Europeans!  Verdi, which has been organizing strikes since September across the German sites, is now threatening to intensify the movement during the holiday season.  (Ref.  130594)

Is Amazon going to relocate eastward? On October 7, the management of Amazon Europe confirmed information that circulated at the end of September in the “Puls Biznesu ” Polish economic magazine, namely that the e-commerce giant was going to open 3 logistics center in Poland soon. Two should open as early as the summer 2014 and the third sometime in 2015.
