We thought it would never happen. After eleven months of tough negotiations, punctuated with a series of strikes, the Deutsche Bahn and the train drivers' union GDL announced, on March 9, 2008, the signature of a final agreement. As a consequence, the GDL cancelled the unlimited strike which should have started on March 10, 2008 throughout the country (see our dispatch No. 80184). (Ref. 080196)
“We got a compromise. There are no winners or losers. We all won,” said Margret Suckale, human resources manager at the DB, at a teleconference on March 10. “We managed to solve problems that were still there during the last round of constructive negotiations,” said Manfred Schell, GDL leader.
