During a cabinet meeting on 28 June, Germany’s coalition government approved a draft law on disabled persons’ participation in society (Bundesteilhabegesetz). Formulated by Andrea Nahles, Minister for Social Affairs and Employment, this new piece of legislation aims to facilitate independent lives for those suffering from disability as well as improving their career prospects. Going forward businesses hiring a disabled worker will receive a State subsidy up to a maximum of 75% of the employee’s salary. The new law is due to come into force at the start of 2017, following due parliamentary procedure.
