77,000 employees, 11,000 agency workers. Since January 1, 2012, temporary employees receive sectoral minimum wage (see our dispatch No. 110795). However, for the IG-Metall, this precarious form of employment remains a weight, especially when businesses excessively appeal to it, like BMW. “BMW has clearly gone too far in terms of temporary work” denounced Horst Lischka, leader of the IG-Metall in Munich and employee representative on BMW’s board. The union member is using a number. He claims that, out of BMW’s 70,000 German employees, about 11,000 are temporary and 4,000 are employed by subcontracting firms. To compare, Audi, BMW’s rival, allegedly only employs 2,500 temporary workers and also between 3,000 and 5,000 subcontractors. He added: the IG-Metall isn’t opposed to the idea of temporary to allow businesses to face temporary peaks in demand. However, the union says that the way BMW uses temporary is anything but temporary and is increasingly looking like a way of cutting costs while walking over employees.
