Germany: IG-Metall and Verdi union compete in industrial service provider companies

Outsourcing boom.  According to the IG-Metall, more and more businesses outsource a substantial part of their operations to cut costs, and not only non-strategic operations (catering, cleaning…).  “Outsourcing is spreading to an important part of earlier services” declared Wetzel, VP of the IG-Metall.  Industrial services (development, subcontracting, logistics, maintenance…) are booming.  Yet, according to the union leader, they pay “very low wages.”  There are two reasons: 1/ many businesses in the sector aren’t covered by a collective agreement and 2/ those that are apply agreements which are completely inadequate, signed by… the Verdi services’ union.  For Mr. Wetzel, for many years, the IG-Metall has looked away from this development, but now intends to oppose it vigorously.  Indeed, he says that many of the tasks that are outsourced are “wrongly” considered as services.  He warned, “We feel responsible for the entire process of creation of value.”
