Union says it’s a problem of equity. Oliver Buckhard, leader of the IG-Metall in North-Rhine Westphalia, explained his union’s requirements by reminding that steel employees gave a lot during the crisis to save jobs and that it was “more than fair” today for them to reap the rewards of the economic revival. After securing a 5.2% wage increase during the ‘steel boom’ two years ago, the 85,000 employees had to make do with a wage freeze in 2009 and a meager 2% bump in 2010. However, employers think that the IG-Metall forgot to mention that, this year, steel production is far from reaching the same level as it did in previous years, which makes its claims “unrealistic.”
