Germany: IG-Metall union calls for 5% wage increase for 130,000 employees in textile and clothing

Employees’ high expectations.  Helga Schwitzer, in charge of collective bargaining within the IG-Metall’s steering committee, justified the wage claim by reminding that employees bore most of the weight of the crisis.  “Growth is back and employees in textile and clothing should get some.”  According to the IG-Metall, after a real drop in 2009, sales grew by 16.9% in 2010.  And, according to the Ifo economic research institute of Munich, textile firms have positive expectations for 2011.  this hangs well she pointed out because “employees too have high expectations regarding their wages.”  Besides, the IG-Metall demands measures to help businesses meet the challenges of demographic ageing.  The unionist says staff is getting older is businesses.  However, their awareness of the stakes of this evolution is still too low, apparently.
