Amidst fierce debate over ways to facilitate refugees’ entry into the German labor market, on Monday 19 October the metals union IG Metall during its 23rd congress being held in Frankfurt between 18-23 October adopted a resolution that clearly sets out its position on the issue. IG Metall delegates have committed to supporting a “viable policy for integrating refugees on the basis of solidarity,” the key to such integration being “fast access to training and jobs”. However the process must in no way lead to social dumping. The world’s largest sector union has refused to accept any derogation from the new national minimum wage, implemented in January 2015.
No to social dumping. In a resolution entitled “supporting a refugee policy based on solidarity,” approved by IG Metall delegates on 19 October, the union appeals for “faster access” for refugees to the labor market and to training.
