Germany: metals workers call for the right to lifelong training and for the right to disconnect in the digital age

With just five months remaining to the federal elections on 24th September, Berlin based IG Metall President Jörg Hoffmann presented the results of the first part of a ‘giant’ consultation process that was carried out nationwide with the metals and electro-technical workers between mid-January and the end of February. Underling the fact that more than 680,000 workers from 7,000 companies he called on the political parties to heed the wishes, concerns, and demands these workers expressed in the survey during their election campaigns. Metals workers notably were in favor of the right to lifelong training to improve career prospects in the digital age and they are also against loosening of the laws on working time, something which employers have been calling for. In mid-May IG Metall will present the second part of the survey that focuses on working time.

High participation rate. By way of introduction, Jörg Hoffmann welcomed the survey’s high participation rate. More than 680,000 employees working in more than 7,000 companies took time out to answer the questionnaire, which took thirty minutes to complete. This makes 170,000 more than responded in the previous survey carried out four years ago, also just before the legislative elections. In another noteworthy point, more than 40% of respondents were not IG Metall members. According to the union
