Germany: one in three employees in the metal industry to receive a pay raise two months early

Wide movement of early wage increases.  Bosch, Audi, Volkswagen, Sachsen…, several large German businesses already announced, this summer, that they wanted to give the 2.7% wage increase, initially planned for April 1, 2011 in the metal sectoral collective agreement (see our dispatch No.  100798), early.  A survey carried out by the “Bildzeitung” (Jan. 8) shows that, now, this phenomenon doesn’t affect large businesses only.  A result of the strong economic recovery in the metal industry, one in three employees, i.e. 1.17 million people out of a total of 3.4M, will see their salary increase by 2.7% on February 1st.  This possibility was included in the sector’s collective agreement (see our dispatch No.  100156).  Signed in February 2010, in the midst of the crisis, this agreement set the maintenance of employment as its priority.  Regarding wages, it provided the payment of a single €320 bonus in 2010 and a 2.7% wage increase on April 1, 2011.  Uncertain as to the evolution of the crisis, the social partners decided to allow businesses, with the consent of their works council, to pay the raise two months late or early.  The latter option has been chosen by a great number of businesses in the sector.
