Germany: quick renegotiation of collective agreements in wholesale trade and hope in retail trade

Ray of hope in retail trade.  Two days earlier, in Stuttgart, Verdi’s union negotiators, who, in 11 regions, call for a 6-6.5% wage increase as well as equal pay for temporary workers and a limit to their numbers, expressed anger as to the stances taken by employers.  Indeed, the latter offered a 1.5% wage increase with a €180 bonus.  “We’ve negotiated long enough, but we can’t see an offer leading to an agreement” said Verdi’s VP Margret Mönig-Raane, who came to support her colleagues in Bade-Wurttemberg before their 6th bargaining round on June 9th with retail trade employers.  In this region at least, it seems that Mrs. Mönig-Raane’s call has been heard.  On Friday, June 10th, at about 5 am, union negotiator Bernhard Frank announced a positive outcome.  The sector’s 220,000 employees get an agreement over 24 months, retroactively from April 1, 2011.  Wages will increase by 3% on June 1, 2011 and by 2% in June 2012.  Finally, the duration of vacations, which used to rely on seniority (6 weeks tops) is now the same for all.  However, no agreement was reached about temporary worker.  It is quite likely that the agreement was reached when this issue was abandoned.
