After years of debate, the government adopted, on February 13, 2008, a bill to modernize the industrial accidents-occupational disease insurance. However, less ambitious than anticipated, it does not plan any reform for the services proposed by the funds, which managers demanded. (Ref. 080132)
Planned by the coalition agreements signed in 2005, the reform of the oldest insurance system in Germany, created in 1884 and paid for by employers only, was under preparation for several years. It should combine structural measures with a reform of the rights and services (see our article No. 070490). However, failing to reach an agreement, the Grand Coalition’s parties gave up the second part, frustrating employers’ hopes to see their contributions decrease.
