Job security and increased joint management. Unlike what some German newspapers prematurely announced, the agreement signed on Wednesday, September 22nd on the side of Siemens’ board meeting, won’t lead to job for life at Siemens. Nevertheless, the agreement intends to durable link the employees to the company by offering substantial guarantees in terms of job security and joint management. Of course, it will all depend on the company’s future economic situation and the atmosphere this pact will bring about. This pact replaces a previous pact signed in 2008 (which will expire on September 30, 2010). Without demanding anything in return from the 128,000 German employees (out of 405,000 employees in total) concerned, Siemens guarantees job security until 2013 at least. Afterwards, the agreement will be tacitly renewed for two-year periods or terminated by one of the parties. In more detail, the pact guarantees that there can be no layoffs or site closures in Germany without the consent of the central works council.
