Started on August 31, negotiations only lasted a few days (see our story 070713). On September 4, 2007, the services union, Ver.di, and the postal services' employers' organization (AGV) announced the conclusion of an agreement on the creation of a minimum wage for the sector's 200.000 employees. It will amount to between 8 and 9.80 euros, depending on the activities and the regions. It should come into effect throughout the branch on January 1, 2008 at the latest, that is right before the German postal market is liberalized. (Ref. 070722)
At first, the agreement will only concern the 20 member companies, which employ about 200.000 employees, from the employers’ organization AGV. Among them, the Deutsche Post (DPAG) is by far the most important. As early as October, these companies will have to pay their employees at least 8 euros an hour in former eastern Germany, and 8.40 in the western Länder.
