On Friday March 06, following years of controversy, the Bundestag voted by a large majority to pass a law that introduces a quota for female representation on the supervisory boards of Germany’s biggest companies (public and private). 108 out of 3,600 companies will be obliged to respect the 30% female quota and if it is not respected the designated seats will have to remain empty. After this ‘historic’ vote, the Minister for Families, the Elderly, and Women, Manuela Schwesig is also working on another law that aims to tackle and reduce existing gender related salary differentials (that are currently of the order of 22% in favor of males).
Access to economic power. “We are taking an historic step”, declared the Minister, Manuela Schwesig at the opening of the parliamentary debate on Friday morning.
