During a colloquy on November 11 in Berlin, the German Trade Union Confederation DGB observed that the work-life balance issue, long underestimated, has become a "major issue" in German public debates and, increasingly, businesses. However, according to Michael Sommer, leader of the DGB, this policy is still a series of isolated measures. And he thinks that only a change in corporate culture can lead to actual progress in this area. (Ref. 080911)
According to Maria Kathmann, in charge of family
policy and equal opportunities within the DGB’s board, the work-life balance
issue is an old tradition at the DGB. But it was classified as a “women’s claim”
for too long. It is now becoming men’s as well. Employers’ organizations and unions
made it a key issue. In this respect, Mrs. Kathmann welcomed the presence of
the DGB’s chair at the colloquy, reminding that in the early 1990s the board
still regarded this as a marginal issue. According to
