Germany: to keep young skilled workers in businesses, the Bavarian idea of “employment bridges” is gaining a following

700,000 specialists needed by 2015. In May, the social partners in metalworking and the Land of Bavaria came up with the idea of an employment bridge for apprentices, skilled workers and engineers. In spite of the crisis, which badly affected the metalworking and machine-tool sectors, businesses need to keep the skilled workforce they will need tomorrow, when growth resumes. Bertram Brossard, VP of the Union of Bavarian Economy, by 2015, the region will need 700,000 specialists, engineers and technicians. Yet, the current situation is hardly suitable for recruitments. “In spite of rising indexes, it is too soon to sound the end of the alert, especially regarding the employment market which hasn’t seen the worst yet” he explained last week, reminding that, with short-time working, there are currently around 84,000 surplus jobs in Bavaria. In these conditions, how is it possible to keep and train young graduates and apprentices looking for a job? In May 2009, the region’s metalworking employers’ federation created the “Beschäftigungsbrücke Bayern” company, with the support of the IG-Metall and of the local government. This structure offers two systems for businesses to recruit even if they are facing economic difficulties.
