On August 21, 2008, the German telephone company Deutsche Telekom presented its restructuring plan for call centers, which will result in 39 call centers closing in two years. The management ensured that no jobs would be cut since the approximately 8.000 employees concerned will be transferred to other call centers. However, Ver.di, the services union, thinks that DT is trying to part with thousands of jobs. (Ref. 080650)
Currently,
Deutsche Telekom owns call centers in 63 German cities, with an average of 90
people employed. Yet, the management claims that these call centers are too
small to be profitable. Their small size imposes important costs upon the
company in terms of rent and computing infrastructures, and makes communication
difficult. “We need larger sites. With this new structure, each site will
