The deal is the second part of a two-year deal struck after prolonged negotiations in late 2009 after the widespread unofficial walkouts of that year in the sector (see our dispatch No. 100577). The first year (for 2010) awarded workers a 2% rise. The deal was agreed in 2009 after a ‘yes’ vote for striking and a rejection of an improved offer in a ballot of union members despite a recommendation for acceptance from the two unions. Further concessions and a recommendation to accept from stewards resulted in membership approval. Agreements in that sector are negotiated within the framework of the National Joint Council for the Engineering Construction Industry which gathers employers and unions represented by their federation, the Engineering Construction Industry Association (ECIA).
