A UK trade union has officially asked management at Deliveroo (a British online food delivery company) for recognition to bargain on behalf of the couriers. Following the recent employment tribunal decision in favor of Uber drivers, the idea behind this landmark move for the ‘gig economy’ is that formerly considered ‘self-employed contractors’ should receive employee status.
The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) sent a letter to Deliveroo founder and CEO, Will Shu, in which it formally requested to represent a group of workers currently making deliveries in Camden (an area in North London) during wage negotiations. This is a landmark move in the UK as collective bargaining normally only involves salaried workers and not independent workers that are typical of the ‘gig economy’.
