Great Britain: Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) organises very active campaign to defeat the privatisation of Royal Mail

In parliament, it is using its sponsored MPs to lay down key amendments to highlight the effect privatisation will have in worsening standards of service for businesses and citizens as well as raising charges. To pressure MPs of the ruling parties – the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats – it has organised thousands of citizens to write to their MPs and commissioned opinion polls which show that, for example, only 23 per cent of members of the public support privatising Royal Mail while 53 per cent oppose it. It needs a revolt from a number of Conservatives and Liberal Democrat MPs along with the support from Labour and a number of nationalist parties to defeat the government when the vote on the final reading of the Bill takes place. Given the growing unease of many Liberal Democrat MPs at the drastic fall in support for their party as a result of being in coalition with the Conservatives, the targeting of these particular MPs may well bear fruit.
