This government request is based on the draft Equality Bill currently discussed in Parliament, which will allow positive action in businesses to appoint more women to senior positions. If the Financial Reporting Council follows up with this request, businesses will have to explain what they do to increase the number of women with senior positions. The Prime Minister said he was shocked by the insignificant – quasi inexistent – number of women on boards, and threatened to take more drastic measures than the adoption of this new principle in the code of governance if, in the future, the composition of boards doesn’t change. The Equality and Human Rights Commission says that, with the current rate, parity in boards will be achieved in… 60 years. Please remember that, among businesses listed on the stock exchange, 10% of board chairs are women, while 25 don’t have a single woman on their board.
