The Trade Union (Wales) Act 2017 that partially overturns union reforms put in place by the UK government in 2016 (c.f. article No. 9641) received Royal Assent on 7 September with a Coming into Force Date of 13 September 2017. Using its devolved governmental powers Wales has rescinded some of the UK’s legislation’s most controversial points including the strike ballot support threshold and restrictions for taking off work for union activities.
The Welsh local Labour government (in place since 2009) promised this move in January 2017 (c.f. article No. 10033) and it affects workers in the public sector NHS health services, education services, local authorities and fire workers. The Trade Union (Wales) Act in particular dis-applies the following:
- a requirement for a 40% ballot threshold to be met before workers employed in ‘important’ public services may take industrial action;
- a requirement for public sector employers to monitor arran
