In July 2017 the UK’s Supreme Court ruling on a case brought by the trade union Unison held that the controversial Government’s 2013 employment tribunal fees system (c.f. article No. 10321) was illegal and on 20 October the Justice Department officially launched its program to refund fees. Initially 1,000 people will be invited to take part in the program and this will be subsequently extended to all complainants several weeks later. Refunds will also be paid interest at 0.5%.
£35 million (€35.8 million): thus the bill waiting for the UK government, according to initial estimates. The problem stems from a political decision taken on 29 July 2013 when the then Tory PM David Cameron decided to implement legal fees for employment tribunal, hitherto free of charge, in a bid to reap some revenues and avoid excessive recourse to the tribunals (c.f. article No. 7833).
