On February 21, an Aberdeen Employment Tribunal ruled that, by virtue of the working time regulation, offshore oil workers were entitled to 14 days of annual paid leave. This decision, welcomed by unions, concerns about 25.000 people. (Ref. 080190)
The ruling. All offshore workers are entitled to paid holidays, decided the Aberdeen employment tribunal, relying on the Working Time Regulations – the British law which transposes directive 93/104 on working time. These oil workers – drillers, food service staff – work for two weeks at sea, and then spend two weeks on the continent without working. The court judged that 26 weeks a year spent on the continent cannot be considered as holidays, but as time compensating the work they performed off
