Minimum wage increase. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) announced that, as of October 1, national minimum wage would go from £5.73 (€6.25) an hour to £5.80 (€6.33) for workers aged 22 and more. Workers aged 18-21 will receive £4.83 instead of £4.77 (€5.27) an hour and workers aged 16-17 will receive £3.57 instead of £3.53 (€3.89). Please remember that, in October 2010, workers aged 21 will be included in the “adult” age group. Another change is that tips and benefits can no longer be included in minimum. Higher layoff pay. This decision was motivated by the recession to better help laid off people. Layoff pay is based on weekly wages, with a limit at £350 – now £380 (€415). This reference is also used in court to calculate compensation in case of unfair layoffs.
